175 Years in the Making

Writer's picture: Yosemite ChamberYosemite Chamber

Last week marked the 175th anniversary of Tuolumne County. Twenty-six other original California counties share the same birthday. In November, a county-wide team came together to plan and promote the history and heritage of Tuolumne County throughout 2025. Led by District 4 Supervisor Steve Griefer, county staff and members of chambers of commerce, the Me-Wuk tribe and Visit Tuolumne County established a vision to “bring together residents and visitors for a year of celebration highlighting our history, natural beauty, stories, and community.”

February 18, 1850 isn’t just a single point in time to be reckoned with. Human history began here more than 10,000 years ago and with care, will carry on another 10,000. Our county’s cultural, industrial, artistic, and tourism evolution is the reason to celebrate.

Visit Tuolumne County took the lead on the 175th Anniversary logo, and has established a section of their website to highlight 175th happenings.

The Yosemite Chamber is representing the Highway 120 corridor on this team, and last week unanimously approved making the 175th Anniversary the central theme of the 2025 49er Festival. Outreach to our local nonprofits and businesses has already begun, and the Chamber is encouraging everyone to join the party! Think 175th-themed menu items or special events. Custom-made gift items and hospitality packages.

Tuolumne County’s 175th Anniversary celebration is an opportunity for our businesses and communities to overcome some of the impact resulting from uncertainty about the future of Yosemite National Park. It’s an opportunity to spotlight the many and varied other amenities, adventures, and educational experiences on offer across our beautiful Tuolumne County. Let’s get creative!
