Meet the Artist: Shirley Horn

Hi, I’m Shirley Horn. I retired from a career in marketing in 2015 and moved to Groveland full time. It took many years and many miles to find my happy place, and I’m grateful for every minute I get to spend in this beautiful area and be amongst this caring community.

Though I’ve been drawing, painting, crafting, sewing, and pursuing other types of artist endeavors as a pastime since I was a child, I never really thought of myself as an artist until I installed my first mosaic in 2019. It was created for my sister’s yoga studio in Los Barriles, Baja California. That was the first time I heard people referring to me as an artist. So I thought, “I can own that.”

Groveland has given me a palette and a giant canvas to take my art to new levels. I love creating and selling baby-friendly products, participating in Tuolumne County’s annual Art Week,  co-chairing the 49er Festival, and engaging in the beautification of our historic downtown corridor.

I hope you enjoy my Trash Can story, “Liquid Gold,” inspired by the incredible history, vital resource, and recreational opportunities created courtesy of Mother Nature–the High Sierra snowmelt that forms the Wild & Scenic Tuolumne River.
